6 Do’s and Don’ts of DIY
DIY can be a great and far cheaper alternative to hiring someone in to assemble new fixtures for you, and in some cases it can even be fun and satisfying to see what you have accomplished. But proceed with caution! Take a look through these do’s and don’ts to ensure nothing goes awry on your do it yourself projects.
- Follow the Instructions
Some may view it as a sign of defeat, others as a cliché, but it is imperative that you follow the instructions if you want your DIY project to run smoothly and end successfully. All fixtures and flat packs will come with a guide so keep it close by for reference to ensure that you not only get things built, but that they are sturdy and long lasting, using the right nuts and bolts in the correct places.
- Check For Wires and Pipes
When hanging pictures and drilling into walls it is easy to get caught up purely in the aesthetics of how you want your home to look. If you are planning on hanging picture hooks, installing light fittings or doing any form of drilling it is vitally important to check for any wires and pipes that might be hiding behind the wallpaper. Drilling blindly into one of these can cause all manner of problems for your home and could end up costing a substantial amount of money to fix so do not overlook this step and assume you are good to go.
- Plan Ahead
When a new piece of furniture arrives at your home you are likely keen to get it installed and up and running. But try not to be too hasty. Set aside plenty of time, and ensure you have all the tools you might need to hand before you start to save any problems during your DIY process.
- Bite Off More Than You Can Chew
Don’t get carried away, overestimate your ability or overstretch yourself when taking on a DIY project. Taking on too much all at once can leave your home in a state of disrepair. Take on one item at a time to minimise stress and stop things from getting too messy.
- Leave Things Unfinished
When embarking on a DIY project make sure you set aside plenty of time to get the job done. Take breaks, but complete a task from start to finish in one sitting to avoid confusion and small parts getting lost or misplaced. An unfinished piece can stay that way indefinitely and leave your home dirty and messy so if you start, try to finish!
- Forget to Consult Your Loved Ones
If you share your home, make sure you are in agreement of where new fixtures are going to go, the colours they will be and when you are going to do it. The last thing you want is your master craftsmanship to be overshadowed by an angry partner coming home to a dirty building site!
